To Sum It Up!

It is the last day of a very rousing year. It started off with high hopes and great expectations as I announced my candidacy for the Board of Education. The first 3 months of the year were wrought with passion, partnership and pursuit. The energy and the “hate” were palpable!

The victory was to be ours, and it was done with an undeniable level of class, ingenuity and historical results!

Regardless to how you feel about it/us -- It was an official GRAND S.L.A.M. {School Leadership Advocacy Movement}!

One of the first questions I got asked about a month or so into my appointment on the Board was, “is it what you thought it would be?” The answer is a resounding, “No – Not at All!” I continue to be amazed at all the adult stuff we have to deal with which negatively impacts the learning in our classrooms, and how little we deal with that which directly, and positively impact the education of our children. Besides approving field trips and educational software packages, the majority of the work is focused on peripheral stuff. More specifically, the selection of our vendors for paper, telephony services, legal services, teachers training, professional development, approving the CSA’s recommendations for hire and the like. I am by no means minimizing the need for such things, but what I marvel at is the level in which those things occupy the brunt of the Board’s responsibilities. Certainly the actual work of the Board is in direct conflict with “the public’s” expectations of what it should be doing.

We need to work on clarifying the Board of Education’s roles for the public in 2011.

I believe the Board should have greater ownership with regard to what is happening in our schools, as well as having the authority to remove ineffective staff. What? OMG, did she just say that? Indeed I did! If you were to ask this community who is to blame for the condition of our schools, I would venture a guess that over 90% would say the Board of Education members. Is that an unfair assumption? Theoretically speaking, no; however relative to the legal and fiduciary responsibilities appointed to a School Board it is not only absolutely iniquitous, but Board members can be brought up on ethics charges if they were to pursue “day-to-day” operational solutions.

“What you talking ‘bout?”

Case in point: Not too long ago we had a Board member brought up on ethic charges for simply asking about the possibility of hiring an individual in an available position. This Board member suffered months of personal persecution, financial hardship and aggravation because the CSA at the time ‘felt’ offended by the inquiry. What is worse – the majority of the board members at the time supported the CSA’s position. What is an even greater tragedy is that the community thinks that the Board has the right, dare I say an obligation to their constituency, to offer candidates for hire.

If you think I’m off base read some of the comments and complaints on the various Blogs and Forums over this past year concerning who the Board should hire in this position or that, fire in this position or that, or give opportunities to for this position or that etc… I too thought I would have that/those option/options. The fact is the only person I can actually “select” for hire is the Superintendent. Everyone else is at the recommendation of the Superintendent. I must agree or disagree; in more specific terms – vote it up or vote it down. This is certainly NOT, in my opinion, the most effective way to manage a school district and there is a lot of evidence to support my position. But, to correct this will take a massive movement by the community and support by our legislature.

This obvious contradiction in duty versus responsibilities, needless to say – is an albatross around my neck!

We are expected to make improvements not with creative ideas, collaboration and communication, but by manipulating the vote thereby applying pressure so as to cause a desired result. It’s so fundamentally evil, which in my opinion explains why we as a community are exactly where we are today.

What’s a girl to do? Simply – serve, educate, share, serve and pray my way through it all!

As I look to what positive impact I can have on the next 2 years and 4 months of service to this community – I think a look into reestablishing the power of the Board of Education is in order. You can’t send an army to a gun fight with sticks. Nor can you build a solid foundation with just mortar. That unfortunately, is how this Board is currently positioned.

I said it before and I’ll say it again – I am not here to continue the status quo, I’ve come to expose the truth in hopes that as a community we own our part(s) in uprighting the educational system in our city.

Happy New Year To Come!

The Art of Effective Dialog -- In Progress...

WARNING...this is a LONG ONE Folks!

The following is a real time example as to why “forums” don’t work as effective communicative devices. Look at the variation in subject matter, the blaming, missing the point(s), accusations, rudeness, and just the overall disregard for actually “hearing” one another.

I’m guilty of it as well, and so I hope by posting this and allowing each of us responsible for writing our part opens the eyes of all us, but most importantly substantiates why a face-to-face meeting is going to be critical in bringing about any resolve to the issues facing Plainfield Public Schools.

Note: I edited some of the postings, pulling out the pieces that were most poignant and/or applicable. Also note the highlight indicates a reply to a specific posting; it ends at the original post and begins at the reply. Please feel free to track the exact verbiage on the NJForum site.

And so it began… (As you read this series of exchanges ask yourself -- Where is the authentic and honest dialog? Why are we so hell bent on NOT cooperating with one another?)

4099.1. Clubs back in the day by tchr4life, 12/25/10 1:39 PM
…The fact that we have so few activities has truly hurt the children. The BOE should rethink what they have done at the middle schools and high school, return to the 5 period day, and listen to the teachers and their thoughts on activities. But, promises have already been broken.

4099.1.1. Do Tell...by rasrahmataz, 12/25/10 9:53 PM
What promiseshave been broken? I'd really like to hear about that. When I went to school there were 8 periods so what would 5 do exactly. I'm not tracking with your recommendation; please educate me. You and others have said repeatedly that 'we' should listen to the teachers. I have yet to be invited to a pow wow session to listen to teachers. How exactly should that happen? Should the Board invite the teachers? I don't think that would be legal as such. However, the teachers could certainly invite some Board members (not all --no more than 4 at a time -- otherwise it's a whole legal matter, but you can stagger the invites). Come on now. I'm not here to play around for 3 years. You want to do something? You want to make some changes. You've got my email and phone number. Never can it be said that I was not willing to meet and discuss anything. But again -- I have yet to be invited. When you are ready...I'm ready.

4099.1.1.1. Rasrahmataz ... Promises broken ???by tchr4life, 12/26/10 12:13 PM

Dear Rasrahmataz…Teachers at PHS and the middle schools are exhausted ... what school system around here has teachers teaching 6 classes (and the salary scale did not show any increase).

why so hostile?? by udhomeowner, 12/26/10 8:11 PM
this confrontational tone the BOE has with the teachers in this district is getting old

4099.1.1.2.1. You Read It Wrong...by rasrahmataz, 12/26/10 11:28 PM It's not (I'm not) hostile at all. I'm reaching out asking for time at the table to discuss what is going wrong. This forum doesn't allow for conversation it is simply a bunch of statements that obviously can be misconstrued as you have mine. I have the highest regard for teachers -- who teach! LOVE them to pieces!

What is getting tired is running in circles. I reached out that's all I can do, hopefully someone will call me...

4100. Promises broken? by dr-emc2, 12/26/10 1:22 PM
This is a major reason we are unable to move forward. Honestly, why does every issue always end with a simplistic response like "who teaches six periods?" ......Really it has nothing to do with the amount of periods and all to do with the amount of time spent with the students. The fact of he matter is that the word compromise does not exist in PPS and the students and the families of Plainfield are the ones who pay the price. Not the teachers or administrators, most of whom live in other cities, towns, and townships (outside the city limits)..... only the students and the families of Plainfield. How much money is enough? Are we paying attention to what is happening in our nation? People are losing jobs and the government is dealing with a financial catastrophe that has yet to be contained. It is much too easy to play the blame game and quite reckless when you look at the bigger picture. However, we do not do that in Plainfield...what we do is hurl accusations and innuendo without ever collaborating. The offer has been made countless times....in fact, today an opportunity was provided......lets see what happens.......Invective rhetoric or authentic collaboration?

4102. Okay, it's my turn!by swbat, 12/26/10 7:12 PM
Do you mean there are board members who don't know what's going on? At least one of them reads this forum but doesn't she know that she has an open invitation to visit all of the schools besides PAAAS? Herb Green used to visit all of the time. So did Cox. Rasheed practically had an office in the high school. Do you want the truth? Well, maybe you can't handle the truth!

4105. SWBAT--Let's be clear dear lady...by rasrahmataz, 12/26/10 11:23 PM
I'm sorry -- did I intimate that I didn't know what was going on? Or...did I ask to be invited to the table with teachers to have a more 'grown up' conversation and find out what can work? I do believe it was the latter. You obviously don't know me at all otherwise you would know I've been to the schools, but let's be real...showing up doesn't mean YOU know what is going on. In fact you can expect that they put THEIR BEST game face on! I have a DAY JOB...so I'm not available to survey the schools daily. I do what I can, where I can as often as I can and I won't apologize for it.

I also notice that you dog PEA, students and parents often but there's one group you leave out repeatedly. Hmmm, I wonder why that would be? I'm not a formal educator so I don't know Block schedules vs. traditional or 6 periods vs. 5, but what I do know is that our students are not reaching their maximum educational abilities and that is evidenced by standardize test scores as well as the need for remedial classes for our entering college freshman.

As I said over and over again --EVERYONE-- is to blame and yes STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO but AREN't YET -- that means you! And further what I know is that my part as a parent is being met as evidenced by my child's test scores, her respect for adults and peers and her compassion for people. And lastly, my commitment to this community is unwavering as evidenced by my willingness to serve on the BOE, PTO, and many other civic organizations that are focused on helping the children in this community.

AS always I stand willing to assist but that would mean you'd have to show your face and call it a hunch -- you'll hide behind some need to remain faceless so as to remain unaccountable. Go Figure.

4105.1. man!! first Christie......by udhomeowner, 12/27/10 8:32 PM

now our newly appointed BOE members are killin' teachers. This is a tough tough town to teach in, thank goodness for most of the kids! Ras, why do you dislike teachers so much??!!

4105.1.1. I don't!by rasrahmataz, 12/27/10 9:20 PM

Those that do what they need to do have my full support!!!

4111. Just ask! by downwithit, 12/27/10 8:11 PM
If the board members who read this forum want an invitation to speak to the teachers, you don't have to ask. If you're concerned about the problems within the district, I have to wonder why it has taken you so long to ask the teachers. From your post (4105) I can only deduct that you really don't know what is going on from the teachers' point of view. You admitted that you don't know about block scheduling or the 5 or 6 period teachers' schedules. You also admitted that showing up doesn't mean you know what's going on but you have shown up in the schools.

So if you haven't talked to the teachers, or spent much time in the schools on what evidence are you basing your votes? Someone has to be giving you advice about your votes. If you have not approached the teachers, how is what you're doing anything different from what your predecessors did? They never did their homework and simply rubber stamped the superintendent's wishes.

You seem to know the problems. Why has it taken you so long to ask about them? Yes, there are problems and we all have to be a part of the solution, but there has to be an acknowledgment that there are problems first. Without hearing from the teachers, you are cutting off a valuable resource and a source of answers.

You said that SWBAT did not dog the teachers. That's true. Too many others have heaped the problems on the teachers already. Teachers are being "dogged" by parents, BOE, principals, vice principals, administrators, students and even the governor. When the teachers "bark", they are usually chastised or muzzled. To their credit, they haven't bitten anyone even though they are being provoked and put down. You expect your students to listen to their teachers, why then don't you listen to us?

As a teacher, I really take offense to your use of the word "dog" when referring to the teachers. (You see I have to interject here -- where in the word did this come from. I didn't refer to anyone as a dog let alone a teacher. See that's what I'm talking about...where's the authentic dialog.) I went with the metaphor only because you decided to use it when you replied to the teacher in 4105.

So, I'll just ask. When and where can the teachers meet with you and your team? In the meantime, ask your other elected representatives to do their homework also.

4111.1. Huh? Just Ask what? I have been asking for years!!!by rasrahmataz, 12/27/10 9:18 PM

It hasn't taken me long. I'm available. Email me, my email is posted in the district address book. Anyone "inside" who has contacted me will tell you I'm true to my word. I'm ready. I'm available after 5 for every day of the week. Will do a Saturday even to get the conversation going.

llame me, por favor.

4112. The problem is everyone else.......by dr-emc2, 12/28/10 7:25 AM
rasrahmataz..keep up the fight....the problem is that discussion requires suggestions and solutions. The post which you responded reflects the tenor of the discussion. It is always adverserial...."Too many others have heaped the problems on the teachers already. Teachers are being "dogged" by parents, BOE, principals, vice principals, administrators, students and even the governor." Whenever anyone questions our "mission" educators do not reflect for a moment instead we join in the "blame game"....it is everyone else. Regardless of all of the many opportunities you have extended to us to meet it is much easier to blame anyone else. If we apply logic to this discussion it is easy to see that the end result of the PPS dysfunction is that our children are trapped in an educational maelstrom. I would love to see a research based solution offered along with the complaint................just to say 6 periods is wrong...is not enough.. explain why is it wrong (with data) If the length of the teaching day is a major problem ......you are going to have a difficult time in the future...because all research data indicates an extended day is one solution of many that will assist students in underperforming schools. I hope we are paying attention to national education debate because this is just the beginning..In one post someone mentioned that teachers are forced to teach 6 periods with 3 preps the person knows that the statement is not factual..Why is it in Plainfield we find solace in rhetorical ping pong?

4112.1. Indeed! by rasrahmataz, 12/28/10 10:09 AM

When I was a PTO member, and on the PEP Board I reached out constantly and was always told that teachers are fearful of retaliation. All I keep thinking was why? From or by Whom? They have one of the strongest unions in the WORLD. They have tenure. What retaliation? And because they wouldn't show up to talk I had and still have no answers.

So I said OK I'll join the Board of Education. I'll give them a liaison to the Board. And I’m not just someone who will just listen, but I’ll help get us where “we” are trying to go. They supported my election for heaven sakes. And now, still no dialog. Why?

4113. Now we're talkin'!by offshore, 12/28/10 8:51 AM
It's taken a long time, but from some of the previous posts, people are talking and yes, listening. I think everyone wants to start some kind of conversation but the right venue to share conversation is still an issue.
Teachers are afraid to make public comments because they are fearful of retribution and so they choose to remain anonymous. If someone wants to know what problems face our students and our schools, please ask the teachers. You'd be surprised at just how much they do know about our community. If you want solid answers to some of the issues which our students encounter, ask the teachers. I'm glad we're talking but I also remember when we began talking before and when the community and schools had more of a voice in decision making within each school. Does anyone remember LINCC? Do we still have a student representative to the board of education? These are things we should be doing and not just musing about.

4114. In Answer...by rasrahmataz, 12/28/10 10:02 AM

The Board has two student liaisons. LINC formation was left up to the bldg administrators. Why? Don't know. Pre- me on the BOE.

As for finally talking...that's just it-- I don't consider 'this' real talking. I have no real opportunity to ask questions and then when I do in this venue someone chimes in "oh you there Board Member don't know what's going on, how could that be, where have you been, why aren't you in the schools etc..."

I'm here ready and willing to meet and dialog. If ever there was an opportunity to have your voices heard before someone who is"listening" -- NOW is it. But it will require mutual listening and dialog not just typing on a forum. It is a matter of effectiveness; I need to be given the opportunity to ask questions for clarity, understand YOU, IT and US, and WE need to reach a mutual understanding of the issues and resolutions. That can only be achieved through a heart-to-heart, face-to-face conversation.

I have no power as the BOE body, but I have myself and speak for myself in this regard. I will meet with anyone willing to sit down and discuss what is working, what is not and why not. Everyone doesn't have to show up, if you are worried about retaliation, there are some vocal teachers -- send them as representatives. Send your list of issues through them or someone who is well versed in them to discuss and answer questions about them. The point is lets get to the table and hash this out.

I'm going to end my discussion "on here" about this as I have put it out there at least 3 times in two days for those that are interested in talking with me they are welcomed to reach out to me. I can't do anything more at this point.

...And so it went!

Forget about the danger of the telephone game, this is "in print" dialog and we've still managed to miss each other's points, put forth wrong and outright erroneous information. We repeatedly overlook the olive branches, and instead replace it with embittered, entrenched psychobabble. How will we ever get to where we need to be if we can't even be honest about what is going on?

And that's why I PRAY without ceasing!

4th Day Before 2011 : Closing a Chapter | Part III - We've Got A Situation!

If I didn’t have my faith deeply rooted in my Christianity – I’d fold. I have been reading and commenting on the NJForum, something I have not done in months, and I am so amazed that the complaints are exactly as they were a year ago. It is as if we really do not want to do better. As if we are afraid of the success. As Marian Williamson’s says in her poetic piece a Return to Love, “What is our biggest fear? Not that we are inadequate but that we are powerful beyond measure.”

Everybody has an opinion, but where are the solution workers? It is not enough to suggest what might, if given, could possibly, if only -- work. There is no way to clean this district up without rolling up our sleeves and pitching in! And further, it is inconceivable that this can be done WITHOUT each and every stakeholder owning their stuff.

Outsiders would like the State to do it. Why not? After all it is not their children that are, or will be affected. Others suggest taking the vote away from the citizenry and appointing a BOE. While even more protest about this thing or that, are embittered and disingenuous. And not a bit of which works together for the good in improving the educational system here in Plainfield.

I asked my daughter a very simple question – "what could I do as part of the Board of Education to improve the schools in Plainfield for you and your classmates?" Her answer was equally as simplistic – “Ummm, to provide us with the best education possible.”

How about that!

We are a case study of modern day Israelites.  You know the ones who wondered in the wilderness for 40 years on what should have been a few weeks journey all because they were too stubborn and selfish to get out of their own way in order to reach the promised land. And, so too we are like Job being tried and tested at every juncture, but will we like he, in the end, stand?

I’ve got 2 years and 4 months to help secure the best education possible for my daughter and her peers!

I thank GOD for His Grace that is sufficient for each day!

7th Day Before 2011 : Closing A Chapter | Part II - The Other Stuff

REAL talk….

The concessions within the agreement only limits the school district. It speaks to what “we” could not do, what “we” had to do, what “we” could not say and what “we” had to say. If you know me at all then you know I have a visceral NEED to be able to share the TRUTH.

Even now I can’t discuss the details of the agreement. Contrary to what one blogger posits – yes, the information IS public, but that DOES NOT mean the Board can release it. It does mean YOU can OPRA it, and that is exactly what will have to happen if there is public that truly wants to understand all the nuisances regarding this ‘jacked up’ agreement.

It’s a sad commentary with regard to the authenticity in which ‘educators’ now pursue the field of education. It was an honorable pursuit and the reward was in the result of seeing students mature into successful adult citizens.

Today, however, for many (NOT ALL) it is just about the money. For those of you who are in this worthy profession, and do well by our students, I pray we attract more like you and less like the ones that have been prominently featured of late.

Just 7 days left before a new year. We’ve got challenges to face and options to exercise… students to educate, administrators to hold accountable, a community to engage and a district to revitalize. It’s not exactly a ‘blank’ canvas, and we certainly can’t gloss over all that has happened, but we can and must move forward anew.

“Slow and steady wins the race.”

8 Days Before 2011 : Closing A Chapter | Part I - The $$$

To be more specific than what has been reported my ‘primary’ reason for not supporting the former CSA’s agreement was more about the lack of contrition and the enormous amount of restrictions on the district. The money portion was inescapable and here’s why...

Federal statute only provides for the suspension of pay (that is to say to suspend someone WITHOUT pay) for up to 120 days and on the 121st day the individual starts getting paid again. That’s right folk our very own laws leave the people of this land powerless. My contention with the agreement was not the payout amount. Accordingly, I worked the numbers forward and backward, personally, and the amount of the settlement was truly at the least cost to our district.

Lots of folks speculated that the Board should have waited for the trial to conclude, and that somehow that would have prevented us from having to pay anything. That’s absolutely not true, nor was it ever possible as per the statute I stated above. I Wished!

The money meter was running and the only way to stop it was to reach a settlement. Look at the current circumstance surrounding this trial; it has been moved once again (this is about the 4th or 5th time) and no matter how long it takes the district would be required to continue paying the CSA’s salary. We just could not afford to go on paying out a hefty amount of money with no end in sight.

I was clear the bucks (literally) had to stop here; in fact the entire Board agreed on that point, but I wasn’t willing to sacrifice the district’s position for the sake of expediency. I felt like our students deserved a public apology, and I wanted to ensure we could prevent this situation from ever happening again. Yes I wanted an admission of wrongdoing, malfeasance -- as is the popular word of the day. Contrition! This was not to be the consensus of the majority. Some wanted to simply close the chapter on this horror story, while others – well -- wanted to spare a friend some dignity. I wanted the TRUTH  -- as usual!

You all can just imagine how that conversation went…

10th Day Before 2011

Slow and steady wins the race!

Let the stories unfold…let the speculators extol – but when it’s all said and done let the truth be told!

Until then I guess, I like all you other truth seekers, will be stuck with the asinine remarks of faux residents with quips of concern that ironically only surface when there is some negative flow about –much like satan and his many minions.

That's why -- We need to get PRAYED UP!

Retro Prospective Countdown | Introspectively Speaking -- 11th Day

This has certainly been an eye-opening year. From creating an election campaign, partnering with, and ultimately befriending 3 awesome fellow Board members, to offending folks, being offended by folks, stretching, growing, nurturing and by God learning by doing!

I embrace all the experiences ushered in – in 2010.

I’ve lost a dear loved who named me as she did because she did not want people to decide who I was, what I looked like, what I was capable of, what my limits were, and what my VALUE to the world would be based on a name. For that – I am forever grateful as I have crossed many thresholds bracketed by surprised onlookers just beyond the opened door. Odd indeed – Peculiar I am!

I’ve embarked upon new yet temporal friendships, what the congregation of Saints would call “seasonal”, and I do not regret a single one. I will not take for granted the people who I come across during my life’s journey. They teach me. They challenge me. They invigorate and reset my resolve. But, what I do not let them do is define me, defile me, or devalue me. Thank God for the spirit of liberation!

I’d like to think the 9 months that I have served on the Board has been marked with positive changes and has acted as a catalyst towards an upwardly progressive moment to achieve educational excellence. It is a worthy endeavor and I am so honored to have been given the opportunity. I look forward to groundbreaking outcomes in 2011.

This year has proven to be a professional windfall as well. I got my office with a view, a decent salary and a worthwhile work assignment. It too has been fraught with personality challenges some as a result of my own idiosyncrasies while others not so much. I am a work in progress. Simply said, I’ve had my share of challenges and varying states of pistivity, but prayer is an AWESOME thing and it WORKS if you WORK IT!

As I look to the upcoming year my plans include expanding From: Tiaras to Crowns (young ladies mentoring ministry); developing community ‘in’ schools-friendly activities on behalf of the BOE; forging best-in-class school board policies that drive positive behaviors, accountability and world-class outcomes on behalf of the BOE; and finally – and of the greatest importance -- I want to spend more time with my Lovey Dovey Wubby Subby (AKA Milani) as she continues to mature into a compassionate, intelligent young lady and future leader.

So Blessed Am I!

Goal: Infusing Technology in The Classroom -- What's Your Opinion?

To Take the Survey - Click Picture

Let Me Help You With This!

So – I come home last night and like every night I ask my daughter about her day. She tells me about her experience with a certain school principal yesterday (not PAAAS).

Apparently, the adult in him couldn’t separate my child from her mom. Are you kidding me?!!!

I guess my Blog posting hit home. Good. It Should!

This is not personal – Don’t make it!

It’s Economics!

It’s about Educational Excellence!

It’s About the CHILDREN! I know this latter statement is an archaic concept – but I’m bringing it back in style!

You hurt her feelings!

You an adult whom she respected and regarded kindly -- hurt her feelings.  Did you think she wouldn't notice, feel it, sense the disregard and disrespect? Did you think she wouldn't mention it to her mom?  The fact that she had it on her heart and mind until I got home disturbs me greatly! Come on buddy. You know me and you know how I feel about mine. Nobody get's a pass to hurt my daughter!

Don’t let it happen again!

Let this serve as my outreach to you -- you know how to reach me.

Stick A Fork In It!

I’ve been doing this civic duty for 7 months. I’m learning, I’m listening but most of all I’ve been watching. And I AIN’T HAPPY! In fact I AM APPALLED!

It has not gone unnoticed that 1 school, for whom and by all accounts had the least district support, made AYP. It has NOT gone unnoticed that all the building-based administrators of our schools make SIX solid figures, are in large measure DISCONNECTED from this community and in greater measure are DISRESPECTFUL across the board. I say – It has not gone unnoticed.

As a resident of this city and as a tax payer who contributes to your hefty $$$,$$$.00/100 – I’ve had enough of YOU!

For every dime I spend on you to further your education, update your skills, and for you to professionally develop – I’m demanding a RETURN ON MY INVESTMENT. The idea and time of ENTITLEMENT is OVERRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've Sown and now it is time to REAP!

It is time to smoke out each and every one of YOU – one by one, in duos or trios, quads, gaggles, troops, groups, crowds or silent partner who:

• DOESN’T DO HIS or HER JOB!

• IS TIRED OF DOING HIS or HER JOB!

• CAN’T DO HIS or HER JOB!

And/or

• IS POORLY DOING HIS or HER JOB!

To the rest of YOU…Opportunity Awaits!

It’s time to make room for those who want to be here...

In Context...

I want to correct a blogger's erroneous interpretation about my "feelings" regarding take-home textbooks.  I specifically said that the building based Administrator would be better able to determine the specific needs of their schools, and because it is their budget dollars they should make the decisions that best serves their school's students.

The suggestion was that Principals should be mandated by the BOE as to what to do -- ergo the referenced policy for same. I "feel" they should be given enough autonomy and flexibility to do what is needed at their school. These are highly paid professionals and they should know how to manage the affairs of their students, parents and schools - FISCALLY, FAIRLY, EFFECTIVELY and SUCCESSFULLY.  If parents have complaints that do not get resolved by the building based administrator then it should be escalated to the CSA and BOE respectively.

It was also shared that the interim CSA has not received any complaints about the lack of books this year by parents, and in fact parents have been complaining that the books are too heavy.  For the record, I have not personally received any complaints either regarding the lack of books this year, but I have too had several concerns brought to me about the weightiness of the children's bookbags due to the amount of books they are bringing home.

So -- there are books...

I personally don't think my daughter needs to bring home a book unless the assignment requires it. Not all do, in fact many don't. When there's a question on a subject matter we look it up on the web yielding a rich source of information that we browse through to get our questions answered. AndYes, I know not everyone has a computer, but many do. And again -- I'm talking about the needs of my household not every child -- just as the blogger in question was specifically speaking to her needs and that of her child.

I think that is one of our biggest problems --we want to dictate the needs of  every household's educational needs instead of providing the flexibility that speaks directly to each child's need. It's more effective and efficient both academically and financially.  If a parent feels their child needs to bring home a book -- then it should be provided - no question! But let's allow the individual conversations to happen between parent and teacher, and parent and administrator (if needed) to decide what is instructionally best for the child.

It can no longer be assumed that every child will have a take-home textbook in every subject, but it should be ABSOLUTELY expected that if a parent wants a book for their child to take home then it should be provided without fail.

So--let me be perfectly clear here-- I "FEEL" a student should be provided WHAT EVER they need to be a successful student; at no point during the discussion did I say, imply or suggest that a student should not be given a textbook. My point, in our brief conversation, was simply at WHAT LEVEL I believe those decisions should be guided.

I really dislike being misquoted/mis-contextualized!

A Stand Up Guy Deserves Notice!!!

Mark Spivey -- Facebooked me via the inbox option in response to my Blog posting today with the following:

Mark Spivey December 5 at 11:59am Report

Hey Renata, just wanted to say that I apologize for the mix-up you referenced on your blog. I think in retrospect that perhaps what you said immediately before or after the quote I used might have made your point clearer. I can talk with my editors about a clarification if you'd like.

Again, my apologies. Hope you're enjoying the weekend,

Mark -- I really, really appreciate your apology. There is no need to provide clarification -- your outreach is good enough. I truly do APPRECIATE It. In fact I'd like to post your reply on my blog IF you are amenable. You are a stand up guy Mr. Spivey!!!

A Point of Clarity...

I want to correct the perception of a quote from me that Mr. Spivey printed in response to a phone interview regarding the situation with fellow board member and friend Rashid Abdul Haqq in a recently published article. Lest ANYONE think that I believe our current legal, penal and otherwise justice system is “working”. At best -- it has pockets of light and Mr. Abdul Haqq is one of those shining glimmers.

What I actually said was that… if the purpose of our legal system is to reform criminals– then – Mr. Haqq is an example of a prison system that works.

That reads a lot different than the naiveté pronouncement that our prison system works. I was making a point that obviously missed its mark (pun intended???). The rest of the quote, although not in full report, I did say and was properly, contextually speaking, conveyed. So much for providing context; consider the lesson learned.

Why provide clarity now...Simple -- I have too many friends and love ones who have been through the penal system; some abused beyond repair, others reformed and far too many willing recidivists, but rarely as a result of a prison system that works...

As for my fellow BOE comrade – I look forward to serving this community’s children along side of you. There is something to be said about an individual who does the right thing simply because IT IS THE RIGHT THING!

Congrats Mr. Brown!

What a wonderful thing to see a fellow Plainfielder experience Success!

A Life NOT in Vain!

Plainfield mother mourns only son as charity workers pledge to honor his memory

Please go to this article written by Mark Spivey of CN for full details.

This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the life of Spencer Cadogan.

The COST is Much Too High!

Life is so very fragile. Why don’t our children understand this delicate balance? They certainly feel the pain of a life lost as with this young man who was senselessly robbed of a long life.

It turns out that a few of my lady princesses knew this young man. It did my heart well to have the first words from their mouths with regard to this awful situation be about prayer for one another and peace.  Already his classmates have begun to photoshop pictures with messaging as a way to show their love and probably help them grieve their loss.  It is so very sad!

To Spencer’s family – We send our heartfelt sympathy and our prayer for comfort and peace during this very difficult time. In Jesus' name - Amen.

An Affair with Flair

What an extraordinary affair this evening!

The international food stations were phenomenal. The ice sculptures, the uniformed food attendants (A.K.A. our Students) and the overall décor were truly a treat to behold.

It was standing room only with close to 200 people, if not more, in attendance this evening at the Plainfield High School Cafeteria as we celebrated the 2nd Annual Culinary Festival.

Thanks goes to SODEXO for hosting and bringing their culinary expertise to our students and our district, and thanks also to our Administration for the invitation to sample the delightful cuisine and hob-knob with our community.

I look forward to many more opportunity to commune with my Plainfield family.

Enjoy the photos. The food and presentation were delectable!

You Said It Dude!

After hearing a recently elected Congressman blurt out "now let's take our country back" I got the worse visceral reaction to that statement. It was so blatantly anti-anyone that wasn’t a white, right-winger in the good ole boy network. I couldn’t believe how insensitive and culturally unaware his comment was given the great strides we have made as a nation and as a people -- that being America and Americans.
Well I came across this article – and although this gentleman tells it a little more raw than even I would say (ergo the random "---------"). This article has restored my belief in the multicultural movement of this “NEW” America—we may be delayed but we will NOT be deterred!

An Open Letter to the White Right, On the Occasion of Your Recent, Successful Temper Tantrum

By Tim Wise

*NOTE: PLEASE RE-READ THE TITLE OF THIS ESSAY BEFORE GOING FURTHER. NOTICE, IT IS AIMED AT THE WHITE RIGHT. NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE. ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS ESSAY IS “ANTI-WHITE PEOPLE,” AS OPPOSED TO THAT SEGMENT OF THE WHITE COMMUNITY THAT IS RIGHT WING, CANNOT READ PLAIN ENGLISH. PLEASE TRY AGAIN.*

_____

For all y’all rich folks, enjoy that champagne, or whatever fancy ass Scotch you drink.

And for y’all a bit lower on the economic scale, enjoy your Pabst Blue Ribbon, or whatever ----- beer you favor.

Whatever the case, and whatever your economic station, know this…

You need to drink up.

And quickly.

And heavily.

Because your time is limited.

Real damned limited.

So party while you can, but mind the increasingly loud clock ticking away in the corners of your consciousness.

The clock that reminds you how little time you and yours have left.

Not much more now.

Tick, tock.

Tick, tock.

Tick.

Tock.

I know, you think you’ve taken “your country back” with this election — and of course you have always thought it was yours for the taking, cuz that’s what we white folks are bred to believe, that it’s ours, and how dare anyone else say otherwise — but you are wrong.

You have won a small battle in a larger war the meaning of which you do not remotely understand.

‘Cuz there is nothing even slightly original about you.

There have always been those who wanted to take the country back.

There were those who, in past years, wanted to take the country back to a time of enslavement and indentured servitude.

But they lost.

There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when children could be made to work in mines and factories, when workers had no legal rights to speak of, when the skies in every major city were heavy with industrial soot that would gather on sidewalks and windowsills like volcanic ash.

But they lost.

There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when women could not vote, or attend any but a few colleges, or get loans in their own names, or start their own businesses.

But they lost.

There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when blacks “had no rights that the white man was bound to respect,” – this being the official opinion of the Supreme Court before those awful days of judicial activism, now decried by the likes of you – and when people of color could legally be kept from voting solely because of race, or holding certain jobs, or living in certain neighborhoods, or run out of other towns altogether when the sun would go down, or be strung up from trees.

But they lost.

And you will lose.

So make a note of it.

Tweet it to yourself.

Put it on your Facebook wall and leave it there so you’ll remember that I told you so.

It is coming, and soon.

This isn’t hubris. It isn’t ideology. It is not wishful thinking.

It is math.

Not even advanced math. Just simple, basic, like 3rd grade math.

The kind of math that proves how your kind — mostly older white folks beholden to an absurd, inaccurate, nostalgic fantasy of what America used to be like — are dying.

You’re like the bad guy in every horror movie ever made, who gets shot five times, or stabbed ten, or blown up twice, and who will eventually pass — even if it takes four sequels to make it happen — but who in the meantime keeps coming back around, grabbing at our ankles as we walk by, we having been mistakenly convinced that you were finally dead this time.

Fair enough, and have at it. But remember how this movie ends.

Our ankles survive.

You do not.

Michael Meyers, Freddie Kreuger, Jason, and that ------ husband in that movie with Julia Roberts who tracks her down after she runs away and changes her identity–they are all done. Even that crazy ------ in Saw is about to be finished off for good. Granted, he’s gonna be popping out in 3-D to scare the kiddies, so he isn’t going quietly. But he’s going, as all bad guys eventually do.

And in the pantheon of American history, conservative old white people have pretty much always been the bad guys, the keepers of the hegemonic and reactionary flame, the folks unwilling to share the category of American with others on equal terms.

Fine, keep it up. It doesn’t matter.

Because you’re on the endangered list.

And unlike, say, the bald eagle or some exotic species of muskrat, you are not worth saving.

In forty years or so, maybe fewer, there won’t be any more white people around who actually remember that Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, Opie-Taylor-Down-at-the-Fishing Hole cornpone bullshit that you hold so near and dear to your heart.

There won’t be any more white folks around who think the 1950s were the good old days, because there won’t be any more white folks around who actually remember them, and so therefore, we’ll be able to teach about them accurately and honestly, without hurting your precious feelings, or those of the so-called “greatest generation” — a bunch whose white contingent was top-heavy with ethical miscreants who helped save the world from fascism only to return home and oppose the ending of it here, by doing nothing to lift a finger on behalf of the civil rights struggle.

It’s OK. Because in about forty years, half the country will be black or brown. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Nothing, Senõr Tancredo.

Nothing, Senõra Angle, or Senõra Brewer, or Senõr Beck.

------------ --------------- ------------ ---------------

And by then you will have gone all in as a white nationalist movement — hell you’ve all but done that now — thus guaranteeing that the folks of color, and even a decent size minority of us white folks will be able to crush you, election after election, from the Presidency on down to the 8th grade student council.

Like I said, this is math. And numbers don’t lie.

Bottom line, this too shall pass.

So enjoy your tax cuts a while longer.

Go buy whatever you people buy when your taxes get cut: a new car or two, a bigger house, an island. Whatever.

Go back to trading your derivatives, engaging in rampant financial speculation that produces nothing of value that turns the whole world into your personal casino. Whatever.

Play your hand, and for the love of God play it big. Real big. As in, shoot for the moon big. As in, try to privatize Social Security, and health care, and everything else. Whatever.

At least that way everyone will be able to see what you’re really about.

We’ve been trying to tell them, but nothing beats seeing it with your own eyes, so “Go big or go home,” Bubba.

“Git ‘er Done.”

“Cowboy up,” or whatever other stupid catch phrase strikes your fancy.

Just promise you’ll do more than talk this time.

Please, or as one of your celluloid heroes might put it, “make my day.”

Do whatever you gotta do, but remember that those who are the victims of your greed and indifference take the long view.

They know, but you do not, that justice is not for the sprinters, but rather for the long distance runners who will be hitting their second wind, right about the time that you collapse from exhaustion.

They are like the tortoise to your hare.

They are like the San Francisco Giants, to your New York Yankees: a bunch that loses year after year after year, until they finally win.

You have had this confidence before, remember?

You thought you had secured your position permanently after the overthrow of reconstruction in the wake of the civil war, after the elimination of the New Deal, after the Reagan revolution, after the Republican electoral victory of 1994. And yet, those you thought you had cowed and defeated are still here.

Because those who have lived on the margins, who have been abused, maligned, targeted by austerity measures and budget cuts, subjected to racism, classism, sexism, straight supremacy and every other form of oppression always know more about their abusers than the abusers know about their victims.

They have to study you, to pay careful attention, to adjust their body armor accordingly, and to memorize your sleep patterns.

You, on the other hand, need know nothing whatsoever about them. And this, will surely prove politically fatal to you in the end. For it means you will not know their resolve. Will not fear it, as you should.

It means you will take their greatest strength — perseverance — and make of it a weakness, called losing.

But what you forget, or more to the point never knew, is that those who lose know how to lose, which is to say they know how to lose with dignity.

And those who suffer know how to suffer, which is to say they know how to survive: a skill that is in short supply amid the likes of you.

You, who could not survive the thought of minimal health care reform, or financial regulation, or a marginal tax rate equal to that which you paid just 10 years earlier, perhaps are under the illusion that everyone is as weak as you, as soft as you, as akin to petulant children as you are, as unable to cope with the smallest setback, the slightest challenge to the way you think your country should look and feel, and operate.

But they are not.

And they know how to regroup, and plot, and plan, and they are planning even now — we are — your destruction.

And I do not mean by that your physical destruction. We don’t play those games. We’re not into the whole “Second Amendment remedies, militia, armed resistance” BS that your side fetishizes, cuz, see, we don’t have to be. We don’t need guns.

We just have to be patient.

And wait for you to pass into that good night, first politically, and then, well…

Do you hear it?

The sound of your empire dying? Your nation, as you knew it, ending, permanently?

Because I do, and the sound of its demise is beautiful.

So know this.

If you thought this election was payback for 2008, remember…

Payback, thy name is…

Temporary.

A Modern Day Genocide...

After attending the Plainfield’s Promise: Speaker Series this past Saturday that featured Director, Writer, Film Maker Alrick Brown, a haunting thought has been a constant drumming in my spirit. Are we responsible for a modern day Genocide? By definition -- Genocide -- is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group (our city’s Youth).

Are we responsible for systematically killing a generation’s HOPE for a better life and world?

Has the pervasive presence of mediocrity in our pedagogy, parental involvement, leadership and community support destroyed the potential of this city’s children?

Death of spirit and self-worth is far more catastrophic than death of the body!

We are a fractured community, and just as a fracture bone cannot perform its function effectively – neither can a fractured society.

How committed are we in finding out what is eating at the spirit of our children?

An Awesome Afternnoon -- RIGHT HERE in Plainfield!

Yesterday afternoon, myself and (4) of my lady princesses from Tiaras To Crowns had the opportunity to hear from, preview the work of, and speak one-on-one with an up and coming rising star – one of Plainfield’s very own – Director/Film Maker Alrick Brown.

The film covered a very tough topic – Genocide; specially as experienced in Rwanda. More notably, however, he shared his concerns with regard to the lack of awareness in America’s schools and in African American homes to share these stories from generation to generation. As we full know; “those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.” He gave poignant examples of how Jewish families ensure future generations know about the holocaust tragedies, and how Japanese and Chinese teach their young about their culture’s past and rich inheritance, to drive home his imperative points of "knowledge sharing" to the audience.

The genuine warmth that emanated from this young man was as fresh as a mid-summer’s breeze! I commend The Youth Exposure program organizers and P.A.L. for pulling this enlightening afternoon together!

This is PLAINFIELD Folks, despite all of the negative press, the random shootings – yes this is happening here – BUT – there are awesome stories among the citizenry that deserve front page billing and community support.

We will not acquiesce to the influences of depravity and destruction. We WILL overcome by committing to be a part of programs that provide our children with not just alternative outlets, but examples of Plainfield Students who have moved on to become productive engaged citizens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon out with the lady princesses and hope we as a community will continue to create awesome opportunities for our youth to see Plainfield in action – the success stories.

They need us and quite frankly WE NEED THEM!!

One Less Egg To Fry...

I know those of you who do the Blog circus, I mean circuit, are expecting some scathing comeback.

Nope!

At the advice of one of Dan’s regulars here’s a simple single sentence:

Dan – I would be extremely honored if you would remove my blog from your CLIPS line-up.

A Worthwhile Way to Spend Your Saturday...

They Just Keep Pulling Me BACK...

For your information I was responding to a question posed on another's blog, and so that I would not have to "wonder' if the blogger would post my reply, I did it myself.

So there...

And as you folks love to tag team me...

The Proof is in the Print...
Turns out I was right...Hmmm --wonder how that could have happened?

Dear Michael...

Just in case the blog owner doesn't feel like posting my response...

Michael-either your tapped in or not. Do you wait to get your child's report card to find out they are failing? Or, do you proactively check the online grading system?
Do you wait to get "news flashes" from the newspapers, or is reading the paper a part of your daily reading material?

Do you care because it's the in thing to do, or do you simpy care?

Let's be clear here -- the agenda is not shared with the Board (that being ALL Board members)until it is shared with the public. So we don't drive advertisement as such.

We read the agenda to see what is coming up when we get it on Friday. It's posted on the web, graphics and all, with highlights of what is to come. It is posted in newspapers.

Concerned folks who can OPRA everything under the sun, Google deleted blog postings, hunt done stories all across this town and rant and rave about everything from trees to bees knees -- should certainly stay "up" on what's going on in the city they live in and the issues they care so deeply about...that's simply my position on the matter.

There could have been more advertisement, certainly, but from experience that might have meant 3-5 more people. The point is the community is failing our schools by not coming out and staying informed, and again that is simply my position.

There was a wealth of information and presentations given that is solid fodder, not this rumor-mill garbage currently floating about, for asking real issue-solving questions and creating opportunities for community involvement and partnerships.

I'll certainly bring this up to the CSA as there will be a part II and hopefully -- I'll see you there.

Good Evening

Just The Facts...

And...WHERE were YOU?

Wednesday night the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and various Administrators gave the State of the District address, and guess what, there MIGHT have been 2 community members present that were NOT employees.

How sad is that!

If an outsider were to read our blogs they would undoubtedly think that there is a lot of concern about this city’s schools and it students by the 'residents' of  Plainfield. Well Wednesday night, our collective “no show” proved that we are more concerned about pumping garbage into the veins of this community than truly coming to the table to participate as partners. You know -- Doing something about it!

There was information on test scores, curriculum, professional development, truancy, ESL program direction, early education strategies, at-risk and graduation rate improvement plans. Search the blogs for these categories (or simply Plainfield schools, BOE) and see how often they appear on ‘our town’ blogs. And then provide some relevant solutions any of them have offered -- EVER!

When do we “the community” own our ROI.

It really is shameful!

The Power of The Tongue (or Blog): Life or Death!

With all the latest headlines about bullying this country has seen over the past several weeks, I asked my daughter to write about it on her blog. We watched the 20/20 special together and I really hope it hits home. It’s important for our children to understand that WORDS hurt. To intentionally make fun of someone who is not a willing participant, to gossip, to intimidate, or otherwise make a person feel less than simply because you want to or can is inexcusable. I read her write-up and of course I wish she had gone more in depth about how it affects students; I’m glad she made the final and most important connection – CHILDREN are dying because of it!

I was neither bullied or a bully, in fact I always took up for the underdog. I’ve always been a PLUS SIZE Model so you bet I was the brunt of many jokes, but I have a fantastic wit. Naturally! And I honed it on the ones who dared to try me. It didn’t mean what they said didn’t hurt; but rather my goal was to make them "feel me". It rarely came to fist-a-cuffs though, and that was simply a matter of God’s grace because Lord knows I said some directly hurtful stuff!

I am very much the same today. If someone says something that offends me or hurts my feelings I strike right back and my goal is to make them feel what I felt. I’m learning that this is not necessarily a good thing, or even the right thing.

As I continue in my service to this community I am learning to be gentler and kinder even if it means not responding at all. For now that is how I am learning. If you’ve noticed [and I KNOW YOU have] I haven’t bothered with the comments about the BOE of late, or the slights here and there; because at the end of the day it doesn’t change my Christmas list one bit. I’m still going to serve, I’m still going to be involved and I’m still going to tell the truth.
