Today marks the beginning of a very exciting book study and lecture series. Plainfield Public School students from grades 9 through 12 will be reading, analyzing and discussing the last book written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Where Do We Go From Here – Chaos or Community?

This book, even for the adult mind (those of us who already think we know everything) is chock full of historical and relevant facts that stimulate critical thought, a range of emotions, but most importantly provide for an opportunity to engage our youth in meaningful dialog.

I won’t be posting the outcomes from each session; you are more than welcome to join us and see for yourself, but I will post some pull quotes from the reading that ‘sing to my soul’ and bring out poignant revelations. The first of which is as follows:

“Nonviolent direct action will continue to be a significant source of power until it is made irrelevant by the presence of justice.” (King, Jr., 1968)

Oooh What A DAY!!!

Yesterday I had the awesome opportunity to work with a team of individuals committed to changing the current perception of the Queen City. Individuals from all sectors of professional disciplines: sales, marketing, medicine, sports, education, accounting, and civics were spearheaded by visionary Darryl Clark to help organize the first ever historic walk/run for our community.

With just over 8 weeks for planning this momentous endeavor, the team pulled together their resources, contacts, expertise and energy. Meeting every Monday and follow-up conference calls on Thursday we keep our noses to the grind stone and on yesterday – in the words of James Brown – we received the BIG Payback making every minute and hour worth the exhaustive effort.

As I remarked to one of the reporters yesterday, my 3 years of service on the Board of Education may not please everyone, but NO ONE will be able to say I sat by and did nothing. I plan to be involved in many more activities such as what was witnessed yesterday during the remainder of my term. It is vitally important that we all take whatever we have, wherever we are, to improve the condition of our city and support and encourage our youth. People coming together for the exclusive benefit of community! It is poetry in motion!

Thank you to the community who came out 191 registered walkers/runners STRONG yesterday! The diversity in persons yet the singleness in purpose were extraordinary!

Let us continue the momentum!

Good Afternoon Plainfield Community;

It’s been quite awhile since I last penned any substantial information regarding the Board of Education on this blog. Primarily it is because I have been writing the Board Brief which for all intent and purposes serves the same principle – informing the community at large.

As I’m sure you have noticed there has not been a Brief produced for the month of the September. That was purposely done given the various training Board members have undergone in September and will continue through the month of October.

I will be working on a Board Brief that will highlight the CUBE and NJSBA conferences as well as share learning as I dialog with other board members from similar districts with regard to strategic planning, programs for gifted students, community involvement and many other relevant topics. This Brief will be released in the first half of November. In the second half of December, I'll do a year-in-review and prospective review of the 2011-2012 school year.

I also plan to introduce the concept of “Before You Run – Navigating through community expectations and legal obligations”. This informational class/training will be for those individuals in the community who have an interest in serving as board of education members. My experience to date substantiates the need, value and benefit of providing potential candidates with an overview of what to expect, what is possible, what is probable and what is unlikely. The goal is to help candidates avoid compromising their position after they are elected. More on that in the coming months…

I was in a website design training class in Pistcataway, New Jersey. One of the students was logged onto the internet and reading the report real-time. Then the 2nd plane hit and I immediately reached for my phone to call my husband to come pick me up. This day among all days I did not drive into school. After several failed attempts to reach my husband, the school allowed me to use their landline.

Finally, I reached him and asked him to pick-up my daughter, then 3, from daycare and come and get me. Imagine my horror when he pulls up WITHOUT my daughter in the car! I was LIVID. During the entire ride we passed helicopter after helicopter, hovering low enough for us to see armed soldiers peering over the landscape in search of... My anxiety grew as this scene unfolded and the traffic intensified.

All I could do was pray!

A twenty-five minute drive turn into the longest one and a half hours of my life. We reach the daycare center. I jumped out of the car and made my way to get my daughter. If this was to be the end -- I want (NO I NEEDED) her in my arms. Relief, pure love and peace engulfed me as I held my Lovey in my arms --FINALLY; emotionally drained I walked to the car.

My story ended with the best possible outcome. Many, many others would not be as blessed.

My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones on this day 10 years ago.

In preparation for the storm, effective Saturday, August 27, 2011, we are requesting all residents to temporarily refrain from parking on city streets; instead to please use their private driveways.

For temporary emergency relocation:

Five years ago today I lost my MOMsie to Glioblastoma Multiforme. It took by family by storm, and in 4 short months we would find ourselves wifeless, motherless, sisterless, friendless, auntless and just all around devastated.

Rumor has it that it gets better, but if it does -- it hasn’t.

I know all the biblical prefaces and promises and I believe them all – but when you lose someone who was the epitome of pure love -- you cannot help but miss their presence and feel their absence.

This is my homage to a world-class friend, an awesome soul and God’s masterpiece of a mother!

I haven’t blogged for a minute, primarily because there just hasn’t been anything pressing on my heart and/or mind to share. The other reason is I’ve begun writing the District’s Board Brief which is due out in 2 weeks. There’s only so much time in a day!

I did, however, have an extraordinary day, or should I say night – this evening. I have begun working with the Youth from the Youth Summit Council on the 2nd Phase of Peace Prosperity and Unity in Plainfield. We were graced with about 11 youth and about that many adults. We went through the data from the survey we conducted at the end of the Summit we held in April. There were some really exciting findings gleaned from the results, and we are going to use this information to springboard into our next activity. I will also be sharing some of the results with the Board and community at large over the next few months.

These youth are so dynamic! They are energized, focused and eager to turn their city around!

In addition to these wonderful youth, I also had the pleasure of meeting one of the truce initiating members who stopped by the youth summit wrap/rap up session. Something this gentleman said tonight hit me to my core; “why are we getting all this negative press for trying to turn our lives around and for working for the city.” One of the adult summit members reached out his hand to the young man and said to him that there are many more that are supportive of what they all are doing.

I really, really hope HE HEARD THAT. There are soooooooooooooooo many more of us who are supportive and encouraged by what these gentlemen are doing. Stay encouraged; the hope and motivation you are exampling is not in vain. There are so many youth looking at you and up to you, for whatever reason, you must not fail them – you MUST NOT FAIL YOURSELF!

The devil is busy – especially when someone is aiming to pick themselves up and rise! Marvel at those nipping at your heels because they are a sign that you are on the RISE!

I pray you all continue to represent Peace & Unity for Prosperity in this city. Our collective energy, commitment and teamwork will be what move this city forward and upward.

One of the More FINER moments in this life as a Board Member...

My Speech to the Graduating Class of 2011

Good evening esteemed class of 2011.

It is my pleasure and honor to come before you at this extraordinary time in your life. I did not know that part of my duty as President of the Board of Education included signing off on each of your diplomas.

This fact takes this occasion to a different level. This is truly personal.

My name binds me to you; we become a part of each other’s history – know I take your presence and your future seriously. I am believing in you to do great thing – many GREAT things.

Do you hear me???!!!

More than 25 years ago I stood on the opposite side of this podium, and my concerns then:

• where’s the party at?

• what shoes am I going to wear ?

• and how will I do my hair?

Fast forward to where we are today and I can tell you that never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself here addressing you all and sending you off to what will be the beginning of the rest of your lives.

I will also tell you that today my concerns are:

• What time can I get in my bed tonight?

• Do I have some flat comfortable shoes to wear?

• But I still have to make sure my hair is tight!

I say this to say to you that very few of us, if any, knew what we were going to be or do “when we grew up”! BUT as long as you pursue continuous learning from this day on you will be prepared to exploit and capitalize on every single opportunity that comes your way!

And if I where honest and I am -- living life is in fact about being prepared for your life’s opportunities.

In closing, I want to remind you all:

• To be patient with yourself and each other,

• To show loving kindness often

• To speak the truth in love

• And to let your word be your bond.

And finally, Be safe tonight and throughout the summer and whether you are going to work or to an institution of higher learning pursue it with excellence, determination and commitment.

Now turn to the right and give your classmate a high five, and now turn to the left and extend a handshake to your classmate. You must be able to be down-to-earth and professional!

Now go forward in peace.

This past Saturday, the 700 block of Park Avenue all the way around to Stelle and Arlington Avenues were filled with sounds, smells, vendors, children and busyiness of people excited about being a part of moving this city closer to peace. It was an honor to share the stage with so many positive people. The diverse ethnicity, professions, religion and areas of service made for an optimal pool of ideas, solutions and vantage points. It was Plainfield on stage!

Kudos to the organizers who took on this large undertaking, your work was not in vain.

There are many who will talk, who will blog (or NOT), whisper, comment, but very few will own the effort it will take to change the misguided direction of our youth.

Thank you for continuing the movement!

Nothing Gets Done Without A Beginning!

Had the wonderful opportunity to speak with, but more importantly - LISTEN TOO -- the young men spearheading the truce in Plainfield during their BKS1 3-hour talk radio interview. BKS1 Radio is a local internet-based combination talk radio and R&B genre music station that has begun to claim listeners throughout the country, and most assuredly right here in their hometown of Plainfield, NJ. I was first introduced to the station when asked to interview last year regarding parental involvement and mentoring.

Although not a religious listeners I do log in from time to time when topics (advertised on Facebook) call my attention.

Tonight/This Morning -- was one of those times and like all the other times the show's topic and guests, as well as a host of call-in and chat room patrons did not disappoint!

Dubbed "The Fave Five" These gentlemen are spearheading a truce among rivaling gangs in an effort to bring PEACE back to the Queen City! The truce is the beginning of the journey to peace in our city. I applaud the young men who have taken the steps to stop the violence! Additionally, I thank the Mayor for keeping her door open. The fact is that they must trust her enough to sit at the table and have the conversations needed to end the killing. It's more than anyone else has been able to do to date.

There is a lesson we all can learn from them; from this. We may not have guns drawn, but certainly the acerbic repartee and invectives that have besieged this administration has turned into a verbal war.

Next week a host of Plainfield residence, both past and present, will come together to continue these PEACE efforts. I hope you will be there to lend your support, find out how you can help, and share ideas on how to develop recreational programming for our youth.

The ultimate goal of this event is to help support the establishment of a Recreation Center for Plainfield Youth!

1st – because I believe in EQUAL BILLING… I want to thank Mr. Dan Damon for showing some support to our students during last night’s Spelling Bee.

Our resident Bubble Bee Blogger – Dan Damon – Shows UP in support of our Students! He is actually standing next to the school that produced the WINNER of the spelling bee. Was this by chance or Dan channeling his childhood spelling bee mojo? Hmmm or would that be(e)…buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

It took the students just over 2 hours to conclude this awesome display of skills and intellect. As one who is absolutely dependent on spell check and Thorndyke - -I have a great appreciation for those who have the ability to spell based on sound (silent g’s, ph (f) and all) definition and word origin.

It was an at capacity crowd last night which was equally exciting. When we come together as a community to support our students – EVERYBODY WINS!

The Geography Bee is next week. I’m looking forward to another extraordinary display of Student Intellect, Parental and Community Support.

Olive – sorry you failed to see Doc’s disrespect to me, which quit honestly has been going on for over a year. I guess we are the living example of enmity the scripture speaks of… However, I assure you my respect has nothing to do with someone’s race, religion or any other personal attribute. It has to do with giving respect to get respect. The fact that I publically stated at the council meeting (watch the tape) that I was there as a citizen when prompted by the Council President to speak, and yet Doc chooses to record my actions differently, only further confirms his inability to see the unbiased facts in matters involving me. It’s quite tiring.

Additionally and as a final note: “paying taxes” and “lifting a finger” come from two different places of social responsibility/community. One is a legal obligation while the other is a matter of the heart, or more specifically -- what matters to your heart.

And for the record – I didn’t blame the bloggers for the lack of attendance – I blamed them for THEIR LACK of attendance. Two different things folks!

PLAINFIELD we are SOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo Failing our YOUTH with our lack of support! There was neither any of our infamous bloggers nor reporters in sight. In total, there MIGHT have been 15 people! What an absolute miss for this community!

This 4 person play featured 3 of our very own PHS Seniors; Nia Ali, Kiara Graves and Adenny Nicasio. I have never laid eyes on either of these young ladies, but I tell you true -- I will never forget them or their performance this afternoon. And I KNOW without a “DOUBT” that we will be seeing and hearing more from these 3 Rising SuperStars!

The storyline was poignant and superbly played. Each actor transported me seamlessly into their role in such a way that I took on their angst, their joy, their fear and their anger. That’s ACTING folks. What a Director and Actor’s dream -- to have their audience forget that this is a play. It doesn’t get any better than that!

This was an AWARD Winning performance Plainfield! The 90 minute play was followed by a 20 minute audience Q&A talkback session. Again what a marvelous experience to behold!

My daughter is now bugging me to get the book! In the end that’s what it is all about…exposing our youth to opportunities that cause create inquiring minds, hungry minds wanting to be tested and expanded.

Well done Mr. Miller and Cast! You've got a fan! Can't wait until the next production!!!

This weekend my good friends John and Wilma Campbell will be celebrating the graduation of their son John Clyde Campbell from Babson College in Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Studies.

Tonight, however John (who has been featured in several news articles to date) will once again be a featured interview on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric discussing up and coming enterepreneurs success stories. It airs 6:30 PM; Channel 2.

In January 2010, the Starledger billed him as a "New Class of Moneymakers". His business is sneakers. He turned a hobby sneakerhead, into a business. He is a dean's list student, and has been the president of student council for 3 years at Babson College. In addition to all of this -- John interned for Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown

He is success driven and an organizer (wonder where he got that skill from). He is a GIVER not a grabber! John mentors inner-city high school youth on entrepeneural and college opportunities. He loves to travel and has visited China and Europe with determined intent to visit Africa and other 3rd world countries in short order.

Tomorrow the Union County Freeholders will present Certificates of Honor to the Plainfield Youth Summit Youth Organizers who volunteered their time during the past 8 months to bring awareness to the plight to Stop the Violence and bring Peace, Prosperity and Unity back to the city of Plainfield.

To their credit, over 125 youngsters were exposed to positive activities and a wealth of information aimed at empowering our young people to make wise decisions.

To the team -- we did it!!!

I want to Thank All those that supported Alex, Jameelah and myself. This journey has been both educational and personally transforming.

Along the way we encountered both good and bad energy, but I have to say the positive experiences with the community outweighed the negative by such a large margin that it's hardly worth mentioning.

There was a certain sense of frustration with the state of our school system amongst the voters we engaged. We would like to let you know that your concerns have not fallen on deaf ears. We will not be the type of Elected Officials that come to you when we need your vote then disappear to carry on with their own personal concerns.

We would like to let you know that we are going to stay engaged, encourage constructive discourse and seek to tap the vast wealth of collective knowledge that I know Plainfield has to offer.

I know that we are all individuals with our own intimate concerns; however we must all keep in our thoughts that we are members of the greater community of Plainfield.

If we all register to vote, making it a priority to research the candidates, and come out to elect only the best individuals to office we will be steps closer to obtaining what should be our goal of having a well governed city with efficient services and a Top Tier educational system.

As a Plainfield resident, I am eager to become a member of the Plainfield Board of Education because I do not believe failure is an option for the children of Plainfield. I will devote my full attention to enacting policies that will embrace high achievement standards for all the children of Plainfield. I will work to enhance a focused and cohesive effort among the board to build a connection between educational traditions and innovations. My background in information technology has made me keenly aware of the need to connect curriculum and technology.

Additionally, my 15 years of working as a Network Engineer at major financial and insurance companies have prepared me for analyzing the infrastructure of the District, and offering solutions that will enable us to do more with less amid funding threats.

My work with mentees in advancing mobile technology for underserved students has been extremely rewarding. As I reflect on the archaic process I followed in the 80’s as an elementary student and the fast track of strategies I employ with my mentees, they are at a better place, and the work must continue with them, in order to keep up with the steady pace of global trendsetters.

Serving as a member of the Plainfield Board of Education will give me an opportunity to effectively develop the kinds of policies that will prepare students for the career demands they will face upon completion of their education from Plainfield Public Schools. The time has come for young professionals, such as Alex Edache, Jameelah Surgeon, and myself to utilize our skills to meet the demands of this New Age, and breathe New Life into the Plainfield Board of Education with a FRESH PERSPECTIVE that will ensure our schools run at optimal levels.

My lifework has adequately prepared me for serving as a member of the Plainfield Board of Education. I currently work in a public school setting similar to Plainfield Public Schools. Additionally, as a member of the alumni, and a parent of a current PPS student, I am anxious to see the District succeed.

I am a young professional, from a family of PPS trailblazers and contributors, and I want to give back some of my talents. As the former president of the Clinton School PTO, I observed the benefits of strong parental involvement. I have worked on the frontlines with disenchanted parents and helped to transform them to advocates for their children.

Last year, I observed the trials and tribulations of a Plainfield Board of Education that checked out on their responsibilities, and that was a shame. (No pun intended, but television, radio, and newspapers agreed). As a member of this community, a parent, and a graduate of Plainfield High School, I was mortified and humiliated . Although I am not here to rewind to the troubles our district suffered last year, I am running to stand up for what is right for Plainfield children, staff, and taxpayers.

I am ready to get involved, in moving PPS to a higher level of achievement. Now that the upheaval of last year is over, the Board must not repeat the mistakes of the “Floridians fiasco”, we can never forget and more poignantly, we must use it as a reminder so that it never happens again. We need smart Board members, complacency, has no place here.

Time is ticking away on our children!

Board members who understand their role and fiduciary responsibility, and are ready to move this district forward, is what this district needs! We need “go to” board members, not go along puppets. There is a war out there and this is not the time to let the streets take over the lives of our children.

I am mindful of the teachings from Agape Worship Center in Rahway, NJ, and fully accept my responsibility to “take care of the least among us”, accordingly I will do my best to make sure the schools are run well.

Three candidates have the energy to run this race and the character to make the best decisions on behalf of Plainfield’s children.

Stand up for what is right, please vote for Alex Edache, Dorien Hurtt and Jameelah Surgeon. We are running as a team of young professionals and we will bring fresh innovations into this New Age for the children of Plainfield.

I keep hoping that the bloggers, reporters, blog respondents in this town will be fair to our youth in their representation of news stories that surround them.

Let there be a shooting, a rumor of a shooting or any other ill-thwart activity about our city's children, and I guarantee you it would have made front page Blogville. Let there be anything that highlights gloom and doom over this city and invariably you will have our city's bloggers kicking it around.

It says a lot about them and the people who respond with illegitimate postings and comments.

I can never let them block my view of the wonderful things our youth are doing, and I will NEVER let them pretend that they care when what they do and write about does absolutely nothing to bring hope back into our city.

Plainfield High School Cardinals brought back the TROPHY! Congratulations to the coach, the team and to the community who went out in full force to support this endeavor.

Allow Me To Introduce ~ Mr. Alex Edache

What a difference a year makes! Last year this time the community was abuzz with the Board of Education campaigners. This year there is a quiet hush all over the town.

This quietness can be a good thing-- meaning the community is pleased with the progress the Board is making. OR, it could be a bad thing -- meaning people have checked out of the process. I pray it is not the latter!

Well, over the next week I will introduce you to 3 of the 4 candidates. The 4th is a 12 year incumbent so he’ll need no introduction here. The purpose of this blogging foray is to provide the community with a brief introduction of the new individuals campaigning for this very important responsibility.

So....let's get started!

Mr. Alex Edache

Mr. Edache is concerned about the educational opportunities available to the children of Plainfield. He would like to utilize his professional and personal training and experiences to help support the Board’s current objectives to improve the educational system in our city while continuing the forward momentum that has been gained over the past year.

He has been a proud resident of Plainfield since 1998.

Mr. Edache has a Bachelor Degree in Land Surveying from Nigeria, and a Diploma in Nursing from the US.

He currently works in a major medical health care facility, and is a realtor for the Plainfield area.

He taught high school physics and mathematics.

Alex served as a deacon in his local church in Nigeria. He currently attends Cathedral International here in Plainfield and serves as a youth leader. He also has served in one of Plainfield’s soup kitchen weekly since 2000.

Missing Girl | Update

Alexis Stevenson was found uninjured, in Harlem at approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday night when she approached a New York City Police Department officer in the 23rd precinct and told him that she ran away from home the previous day.

"She was taken into protective custody by the NYPD who contacted the Summit Police Department," said Lt. Steven Zagorski in an e-mail Wednesday morning. "The Summit Police department in turn contacted her parents who responded to NYC to take custody of their daughter."

Zagorski said the daughter of Board of Education Vice President Michelle Stevenson and husband Kenneth, was alone when she approached the officer.

"We are relieved and thankful for her safe return," Michelle Stevenson said by e-mail late Tuesday night.

Stevenson was reported missing on Monday morning after she was seen walking away from Summit High School shortly after 7:45 a.m.

It is still unknown at this time why the teen ran away from home.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a stop the bullying conference with our Interim Superintendent sponsored by Rutgers University, Upward Bound. Also in attendance were about 100 of our students along with approximately 400 other students county wide.

It started with a 7-person panel representing education, judicial, law enforcement, social services, GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) and LLEGO (Gay–Bisexual-Transgender Union of Rutgers University). The broad discipline and the “hue” of the panel were extraordinary, and in my opinion allowed every student in that room to feel personally invited to be a part of the conversation.

For many a detail like diversity is often ignored, overlooked and/or undervalued, sometimes unconsciously – sometimes not. For me, that sets the tone for everything else I will experience during an event. If I don’t see people who like me as an integral part of the conversation, in leadership, then I don’t feel “my” experience will be fairly represented – and at the end of the day don’t we all just want to be able to relate and be related to? This is a deeper conversation for a later time. For now – let me share the awesomeness of this well planned, well orchestrated information rich student-centric conference.

The knowledgeable panel gave very sound advice, and very specific examples of bullying and its legal implications. For example, most students (as well as many adults) think of bullying as a physical act of brutality, but in fact with the advent of social networks and text messaging this definition has taken on a whole new life. Texting insults, sexting (sexual provocative text messages or photos), posting photos without permission and sending rumors via the internet are all prosecutable under the newly constructed bullying laws in our State. The prosecutor on the panel gave the student very clear guidance as to the seriousness in which bullying is being viewed and prosecuted by our State. And although she informed them her goal was not to scare them, I think she did a pretty good and appropriate job in giving them honest information and a formal warning.

The audible gasps by the students let me know many began to rethink some of the things they may have posted, participated in, and/or commented on.

There was also a sensitivity element shared by the panelists. The widely used expression “That’s so Gay” and the very popular use of the word “Nigger” were two called out specifically. A feeling and face were put on these two verbal expressions. As I watched the emotions on the student’s faces I saw an awareness light their eyes. Certainly I don’t expect that they all got it, or that it will be eradicated, but I certainly believe the more people who become aware of how it makes people feel (thus humanizing it) the closer we become to a more caring society.

Another relevant and often overlooked part of bullying that was highlighted was with regard to the onlooker, the passerby, the passive participant. Again, in watching the student’s reactions and hearing their audible rumblings, I think they were exposed to another part of the bullying equation. One of the panelists did a demonstration that provided the students with a way to effectively manage through a bullying situation. She showed the students how to approach the “victim” and walk them away from the situation, thus diffusing it. It was practical and applicable, and was met with a rousing round of applause once the demonstration concluded.

They also had a phenomenal speaker who did a live presentation for almost 2 hours. This deserves its own post over the weekend.

The maturity and behavior of our students and all those in attendance was laudable. Not a single incident, not a profane word or a single raised voice in agitation. Our PHS and Barack students did us PROUD PLAINFIELD!

What "We" Need!!

In the past year we’ve had two businesses come into town; C-Town and 7/11 – I personally contacted the owners of both of these establishments. (Note: Pollo Campero was not yet here.) I spoke to the owner of C-Town to discuss employment for some of my youth mentees. I provided them with applications and my contact information. I went back and still nothing resulted, not even a courtesy phone call.

How do we as a community get these businesses to understand that the very solvency of their businesses depends on the health and wellness of the youth in this community?

The Mayor offered this tidbit as a result of following up with C-town; apparently they complained that they (Plainfield residents) were not being responsible employees. They were calling out last minute, not showing up at all or showing up late. The implication is that Plainfield residents are not employable.

If someone told me this about my city’s residents I would immediately implement a job training program, as well as negotiate with the displeased merchant to allow me an opportunity to help him or her find proper placement.

I think here’s where we X, Y, and older generations falter. We forget that someone taught us. None of us were “good” employees automatically. We were coached through mock interviews, behavior expectations/role modeling, dressing for success ideas, eye contact and hand shaking strategies, as well as information to help us understand what employers look for when hiring.

We owe it to this generation to do likewise!

I have read a lot of ire regarding the contract awarded to the Heard One Complex for job training, but let me tell you a little story. I had three mentees that graduated high school this past year, neither of them opted for college for one reason or another so I sent them to the Heard One job training program over the Summer. Only One went two didn’t.

The one that went has two jobs to date. That’s right not 1 but 2. The other two felt they didn’t need this program and now they are both struggling to find jobs. So often people take issue with process, or their perception of the lack of proper processing, that they forget to take a look at the actual and factual -- like can they do what they say they will do, and are they doing what they said they would do. If I were to measure the effectiveness of the Heard One job training program they would be running at 100%.

To our Mayor (and had she not left out of the meeting so quickly I would have told her personally) I say go back to C-Town; Dairy Queen, McD’s and that entire corridor of businesses and negotiate employment opportunities for our young people as though their life depends on it because guess what – it does. Call me – I’ll go with you!

I heard our youth say loud and clear that we need to work on providing them with:

• Job Training

• Job Opportunities

• Safe, Engaging, Recreational Activities that they would like to do.

If we focus on anything other than what will produce any of these three things we will continue to fail our youth and the damage will be inestimable!

What I Heard...What I think -- What I Think I Heard!

It was quite encouraging to see such a cross-section of participate at the recent Youth Master Plan session; (YMP- as I will be referring to it going forward) a meeting led by Council President Annie McWilliams. There were entrepreneurs, elected officials, pastors, business and medical professionals, law enforcement, educators, social services and recreational personnel, a gang member, as well as current students who live in the district at the table.

There were no loss for words with this bunch of seasoned elocutionists, but some of the more salient points were delivered by a young man, and current gang member, and a few of our youth who are working on the Plainfield Youth Summit 2011 (more to come about this initiative).

Our law enforcement seem to be concentrating on identifying the misdirected youth, our Mayor was totally absorb with what “she” has done, what “she” is proud of and what “she” would like to see happen.

The problem I have with both of these positions is that 1). Once you have identified the troubled youth – then what? What alternatives are you going to offer them to counter and/or replace the negative behaviors?

And

2). If what you have done is not stemming the tide of gang violence then it is NOT effective for the very purpose for which it was created. I am not going to jump on the bandwagon to beat our Mayor down, but I will say I was disappointed with her decision to use this meeting as a bully pulpit instead of an opportunity for collective discourse regarding the uplifting of our youth. It certainly is not all her fault, but it would be ludicrous to continue to poor energy and effort into something that is not working. If the youth are telling you they need jobs, and what you are doing is not creating employment opportunities – then you are NOT helping to provide solutions to the issues.

They are telling us THEY NEED something to do…THEY NEED a job…THEY NEED a way to meet financial obligations in their households.

Why do we bother asking our youth what they want and need only to provide them with what “we” think they want and need?

I think the answer to the issues facing our youth is as simple as giving them what they have asked for -- alternative, safe recreational activities that THEY NEED, WANT and will ENJOY……….and………jobs!
